Reader, Lover of Books — book, Glenn Goluska, 1981

The second Reader, Lover of Books exhibition was held at the North York Public Library in 1981. Once again designed and typeset by Glenn Goluska, the catalogue continues the quiet visual language established in the earlier volume. The cover again features Carl Dair’s Cartier Roman, with interior typography also in Trump Mediaeval.

Notes

The 1981 exhibition continued the celebration of Ontario’s private press and fine printing community begun three years earlier. While the first Reader, Lover of Books catalogue helped solidify a shared identity for the region’s printers, this second volume widened the lens – including fifty-seven additional items from thirteen presses, five of which had not been shown before: Abraxus Press, William Barker, Carl Dair, Dreadnaught, and Greyn Forest Press.

In both catalogues, Glenn Goluska’s typography offers a quiet echo of the tradition it carefully documents. The use of Cartier Roman – Carl Dair’s ambitious attempt to define a distinct Canadian typeface – reinforces the exhibitions’ broader intent: to root the book arts in both craft and place. – Rod McDonald
