Typomundus 20 – judging, International Center for the Typographic Arts, 1964
Notes
The international panel of judges consisted of: Max Caflisch (Switzerland), Carl Dair (Canada), Louis Dorfsman (USA), Olle Eksell (Sweden), Roger Excoffon (France), Hiromu Hara (Japan), Oldrich Hlavsa (Czechoslovakia), Hans Neuberg (Switzerland), Anton Stankowski (Germany), Horst Erich Wolter (Germany), Hermann Zapf (Germany), and Piet Zwart (Netherlands).
Judging took place in October 1964 at the Toronto Board of Education building on College Street. Over ten days, the jury reviewed more than 10,000 submissions and selected 612 works for inclusion in the exhibition. The scale and international scope of the judging made it one of the most significant typographic exhibitions ever organized in Canada.
Efforts were made to ensure that no single style or ideology dominated the final selection. In his opening remarks, organizer Aaron Burns reminded the jury: “Each of you is identified with a particular field of professional interest and activity. It is precisely because of this difference that we have asked you to serve as a member of this distinguished jury.” – Rod McDonald
