The Shaw Correspondence School’s Commercial Design booklet, Lesson VI
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, before art schools offered courses in commercial art and lettering, the Shaw Correspondence School provided instruction in both subjects by mail. Founded in 1892 by W. Henry Shaw as the Central Business College in Toronto, the school attracted many well-known artists to its staff. Among them was Group of Seven co-founder J.E.H. MacDonald, who joined in 1909 and later served as supervisor of the Art Department.
