Type & Paper

A handbook of contemporary type on contemporary paper
The first in a series of five booklets written and designed by Carl Dair for E. B. Eddy Paper, this volume explores the five basic classifications of typefaces. Dair selected Caslon (Old Style), Bodoni (Modern), Futura (Sans Serif), Stymie (Square Serif), and Lydian (Calligraphic) to illustrate these categories. He describes the fundamental characteristics of each type family, demonstrating how their appearance changes when printed on different papers, reversed out of coloured backgrounds, or combined with various screen effects. He also examines how these typefaces interact with different display faces, offering insights into their versatility and application.
