Envelopes – Cooper & Beatty, Tony Mann, 1964

For many clients, the most visible element of Cooper & Beatty’s 1964 identity system was their bold orange delivery envelope. Whether seen on a studio desk or in a reception area, Design Director Tony Mann ensured there was no mistaking when a package had arrived from Cooper & Beatty.

Notes

By the 1960s, photo-typesetting had become the standard for commercial typography, and with it came a new logistical reality: delivery. Every job was now delivered as camera-ready type on film or paper, which meant envelopes, and a lot of them.

Cooper & Beatty understood that these delivery envelopes were more than just utilitarian objects; they were part of the client experience. For art directors and production teams, the arrival of an orange C&B envelope marked a key moment – their rough layouts had returned as finished type.

Tony Mann recognized that even something as ordinary as an envelope could carry meaning. The assertive orange, the cool restraint of Helvetica, and the careful proportioning all reflect the same design thinking behind C&B’s broader visual identity.

It’s tempting to overlook small details like envelopes. But they offer clues – not just about how a company presented itself, but about how it wanted to be seen. – Rod McDonald
